Here are some examples of the word light in the New Testament. This is the Greek definition according to Strong’s Concordance/Thayer’s Definition. Please note that just because it’s spelled differently in English does not necessarily mean it’s different words in Hebrew and vice versa. Sometimes it can be different spelling and the same Hebrew words while other times it can be the same English spelling but different Hebrew words.

  • Light [ameleo] – This means to be careless or to neglect
  • Light [elaphros] – This means light in weight, quick or agile.
  • Light [epiphaino] – This means to appear, become visible, give light, to bring to light, to become clearly known, or show one’s self.
  • Light [epiphauo] – This means to give light, to shine upon. Also, put as Christ will pour upon you the divine truth as the sun gives light to men aroused from sleep.
  • Light [hapto] – This means on fire, kindle, light, to fasten, adhere to, to fasten fire to a thing or set of fire.

  • Light [phoster] – This means light, illuminator, of the stars and moon, brightness.
  • Light [photeinos] – This means bright, full of light, composed of light, of a bright character, or well lit.
  • Light [photismos] – This means light, the act of enlightening, illumination, brightness, bright light.
  • Light [photizo] – This means light, to enlighten, illuminate, make see, to give light, to shine, to bring to light, render evident, to cause something to exist and come to light to be clear to all, to spiritually imbue with saving knowledge, instruct, inform, teach, to give understanding.
  • Light [pipto/peto] – This means to fail, fall, light on, to descend from a higher place to lower, be thrust down, to descend from erect position to prostrate, to be cast down from a state of prosperity.
