I remember when I first read about Cain’s offering in the Bible I wondered what was wrong with it? I recall hearing sermons on the subject but I still didn’t fully understand the reason behind why Cain’s offering was rejected. In the back of my mind, I still had questions about it. Thank God He finally gave me an answer that I could actually understand and now you can too. So why exactly did God reject Cain’s offering?
Hebrews 9:22 (KJV) states “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” Cain was aware of what God said was acceptable & required for an offering. However, he still chose to bring an offering he thought should be acceptable instead of an offering that God told him was acceptable.
There are more scriptural references in the Bible concerning why Cain’s offering was rejected. It even reveals Cain knowing the type of offering required by God and still bringing something else that didn’t fit God’s criteria. However, there is so much more we could also learn from Cain and Abel’s offerings. So that being said let’s take a deeper look into this and other important things we can learn from this particular situation.

Cain & Abel's Offering
There are a couple of key things I want to point out about how Cain and Abel approached the sin matter in their day. There were two types of offerings brought to God.
- Abel brought an animal sacrifice. (Offering that God required)
- Cain brought a fruit offering. (Offering that some think should be acceptable)
- Genesis 4:1-7 (KJV) And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.”
Notice, not every offering that people bring to God is considered acceptable from God’s perspective. Although the person may think it should be considered acceptable. In verse 5 Cain reacted strongly and was very angry that God didn’t respect his offering. Cain thought God should have respected his offering. However, the offering has to fit what God deemed as acceptable. The offering must fit God’s criteria and not necessarily our criteria.
So what was wrong with Cain’s offering in the first place? Why was Abel’s offering ok?
Abel took an offering that he had no control over the outcome. He took from the firstborn of the flock which was the best he had. It was an innocent lamb that shed blood as an offering. The scripture says blood has to be shed for sin.
Cain’s offering, on the other hand, came from his actions and hard work. He produced what he wanted atonement to be but that wasn’t good enough because there was no shedding of blood. So where there is no shedding of blood, means there is no remission of sin.
- Hebrews 9:16-22 (KJV) For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, 20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. 21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Cain and Abel were indeed before the law of Moses. So did Cain actually know that the shedding of blood was a requirement for a sin offering?
Did Cain Know What Was An Acceptable Offering?
Would it be wrong to say you’re probably wondering what verses I’m referring to exactly? I know you’re probably thinking how did Cain know what was an acceptable offering because I was thinking the same exact thing. Wanting proof from the Bible is actually a great characteristic to have. That being said I know sometimes the King James Version of the Bible can sound confusing so let’s look at God’s response to Cain in another translation.
- Genesis 4:7 (ISV) If you do what is appropriate, you’ll be accepted, won’t you? But if you don’t do what is appropriate, sin is crouching near your doorway, turning toward you. However, you must take dominion over it.
To me, that’s an amazing statement and it really got me thinking! It actually sounds like God was reminding Cain what an acceptable offering for sin was. It’s as if God previously spoke with Cain and explained what an appropriate and inappropriate offering for sin is. God didn’t force Cain to bring the proper offering but he did explain here if he didn’t bring the appropriate offering that sin is at his door. However, God says you must take dominion over sin and this is by the appropriate sin offering.
God could not hold Cain accountable for the offering he brought unless he spoke to Cain about it one way or another. Let’s look at what Jesus states in the book of John concerning the world.
- John 15:22 (KJV) If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.
As you can see if Jesus didn’t speak to them the truth…There would be no sin. If he didn’t tell them, then they would have an excuse for sin. But since the truth was shared to them there was no room for excuses because sin was exposed.
- John 1:1-2 (KJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God.
- John 1:14 (KJV) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
- Hebrews 13:8 (KJV) Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
Based on these scriptures we can see that Jesus is the Word that was made flesh and this is the same Word from the very beginning. We also can see that Jesus/God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
Knowing this we are able to see the situation with Cain clearly.
What I’m pointing out is why would Cain’s sin and offering be any different from when Jesus spoke about the world? Why would people think God didn’t tell Cain about his sin and what type of offering is acceptable to Him?
Notice in Genesis 4:7 that God is responding to Cain’s sacrifice as if Cain knew what type of sacrifice was acceptable.
- Genesis 4:7 (ISV) If you do what is appropriate, you’ll be accepted, won’t you? But if you don’t do what is appropriate, sin is crouching near your doorway, turning toward you. However, you must take dominion over it.
I know God had this conversation with Cain at some point before because of the scriptures.
If He didn’t explain to Cain what an acceptable offering was then God couldn’t hold Cain accountable. If God never told him, then Cain would have had an excuse for his sin. Just like Jesus said in John 15:22 about the world. (See John 15:18-27)
Since God doesn’t change then it would have been the same situation for Cain.
God was actually being patient and trying to teach Cain. That’s why it’s so important to have a pure heart and be teachable by God. Cain knowing what God said still brought the wrong type of offering.
God Told Cain But Do We Know How He Told Him?
What I don’t know is exactly how God told Cain. the Bible doesn’t clearly state that.
Maybe his parents, Adam and Eve explained how God sacrificed an animal to cover their sin.
- Genesis 3:21 (KJV) Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
As you can see God had to make coats of skin to cover Adam and Eve.
- The word skin (H5785) in the strong concordance is “or” which means skin by implication hide or leather.
It doesn’t take rocket science to realize that skin and leather/hide comes from an animal. To get that skin/hide God had to shed animal blood and this was to cover Adam and Eve’s sin.
So maybe Adam and Eve explained this to Cain and Abel.
Maybe God told Cain and Abel directly about sin offerings.
However, we can conclude based on the previous scriptures discussed that God let Cain know what type of offering was considered appropriate and acceptable.
We don’t get to choose how to handle the big sin problem according to our own wisdom. Only God knew the correct answer to that. The good news is that He also told us the answer.
It’s up to us to trust the creator and not trust the sin-nature or the carnal mind about what we choose to be “acceptable” as the answer. That’s exactly what Cain did here, he trusted his own actions and works over what God chose as acceptable. (See Romans 1:25)
The Perfect Solution To Sin
The reality is God didn’t want sacrifices and offering’s from the beginning but it was necessary to protect us and handle the sin situation. All God wants is His kids back. That’s why he made it so simple with the perfect offering for sin.
- Hebrews 10:5-10 (KJV) Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. 7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. 8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; 9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
There was only one sacrifice that could truly remove our sin and restore us back to our original state before sin. That’s through the sacrifice/offering of Jesus Christ. Animal sacrifices just wouldn’t get the job done in the end.
- Hebrews 9:11-15 (KJV) But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. 13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: 14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
As you can see God didn’t find pleasure in these sacrifices for sin but they were needed for the time. He knew these types of sacrifices and offerings couldn’t fix the sin issue completely. It only covered their sins for a year and had to constantly be repeated year after year.
However, God found pleasure in the perfect offering of Jesus Christ. God knew that Jesus wasn’t a temporary solution like animal sacrifices/offerings. Those types of offerings were just a foreshadow of Jesus. Jesus, however, counted it as joy to be our offering and atonement of sin.
- Hebrews 12:2 (KJV) Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
You and I were the joy set before Jesus. He was delighted and wanted to lay down His own life so we could finally have dominion over sin. So sin could finally be removed from us once and for all. He was happy that we could finally be restored back to our true identity which is found in Christ as if we never sinned.
Todays Judgment For Born Again Believers AKA The Way Of Abel
Abel’s offering was in line with what was required according to God. Although Abel sinned, he was declared righteous because he took dominion over sin via the sacrifice of the lamb. What made him righteous was the offering which was the shedding of blood from the lamb. (See Genesis 4:4,7)
- Hebrews 11:4 (KJV) By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
Abel also had a choice to make about what type of offering to bring. Just like how Cain had a choice. Abel could have brought anything and hoped God was okay with it. However, Abel chose an offering that God said was acceptable.
Today we all have a choice to make regarding sin and an offering for it. The people who choose the same way Abel did with his offering will become born again believers. This group of people will respond to God based on what He said is acceptable for today and that is Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is today’s offering for sin. Faith in the Lord Jesus is the only way to receive remission of sins and eternal life in heaven. God says He is the only offering for sin and He is the only true way to the Father. The only way to take dominion over sin according to God is through the offering of Jesus Christ.
- John 14:6 (KJV) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
- Romans 6:23 (KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 1 John 2:2 (KJV) And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
- Jesus said in John 3:16-17 (KJV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
- Hebrews 9:12 (KJV) Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Abel’s judgment was poured out on the offering of the lamb. The lamb was considered judged for Abel’s sin so he didn’t have to be judged.
This is just like Jesus for born again believers today. Jesus not only removed believer’s sin from them, He actually took all their judgment for their sin at the cross as well.
- John 12:30-33 (KJV) Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. 31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.
The word men here is italicized which means it was added with the intention to help the reader understand, but it wasn’t in the original text.
This overall statement is dealing with the subject of God’s judgment. (See verse 31)
- So verse 32 could be read like this, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all
menunto me.“
Jesus never sinned but sin still needed to be judged and blood still needed to be shed. This verse is referring to Jesus drawing all the judgment for our sins on His body at the cross.
By this statement of love, it will actually draw people to Him. He did this so we could be righteous and also restore our relationship back to God our Father as if we never sinned.
- 1 Peter 2:21-24 (KJV) For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV) For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Sin was a huge issue and there must be judgment for it. That’s why Jesus came. He came to save us and set us free from the judgment of sin. When we become born again, it’s just as if we were put on that cross with Jesus. Our judgment was poured out on Jesus at the Cross. It’s as if those who accept Jesus as their Lord and savior actually died and was buried with Christ.
Jesus rose again and is alive and the Holy Spirit now lives inside us. We are now declared righteous. We are now dead to sin but alive unto God. Old things have passed away and all things have become new. We now have our names written in the book of life and will be with God for eternity in heaven.
- Romans 6:4 (KJV) Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
- Romans 6:11 (KJV) Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
- 1 Corinthians 6:19 (KJV) What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Born again believers will end up choosing this path and choosing to believe God/Jesus over their feelings or emotions in regards to sin. However, this is not the path that all will take. Some prefer the way Cain handled the sin and will follow in his footsteps.
Todays Judgment For Non-Born Again Believers AKA The Way Of Cain
Cain’s offering was not in line with what was required according to God. The way of Cain involves choosing a sacrifice/offering for sin based on what the person wants it to be. That could be multiple different things but it doesn’t mean God will accept it. Here are some examples of today.
- It could be a fruit offering
- It could be an offering based on your own works
- It could be self-righteousness according to what society says is right but goes against what God said
- It could be rejecting offerings all together
- It could be, being justified by the works of the law
Today there is one thing in common with Cain’s type of offering. The offering is not Jesus Christ
The truth is Jesus is the only way to remove our sins and reconcile us back to our Heavenly Father. Here are some scripture references pointing out that faith in Jesus is the only way.
- 1 Timothy 2:4-6 (KJV) Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
- John 14:6 (KJV) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
- Jesus said in John 17:3 (KJV) And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
- John 10:7-11 (KJV) Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

The sad reality is some will choose to reject the free gift of Jesus as their offering for sin and bring an offering they find suitable in their own mind. Just like how Cain brought his own type of offering for sin and rejected what God decided as an acceptable offering for sin.
Cain decided to bring his own fruit offering instead. It was an offering Cain thought should be appropriate and he believed God should have to accept it. He even did this after God told him the truth about an offering. So God rejected Cain’s offering since he disobeyed and since no blood was shed. (See Genesis 4:5-7)

- Jesus said In John 8:23-24 (KJV) And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
Some people will still choose the path of Cain and will have sin right at their door turning towards them. That’s the path where they think God will be okay with any sacrifice. However, they ultimately disobey what God said and required for today’s acceptable offering for sin.
These people will believe their offering is an “acceptable” solution/offering for sin. But in the end, those types of offerings are something other than Jesus. So there will be no atonement for their sin. These types of offerings will get rejected by God.
Some may choose to not follow God at all after their offering gets rejected. They may think God is too harsh and irrational but God tried to tell them the truth on what to bring. God in love, gave them the correct answer to the sin issue. When in reality they just didn’t like God’s answer.
Some may choose to follow a different type of “god” who will tell them anything they want to hear. However, that won’t do anything when they have to stand before the only true God who gave them the answer to life which is Jesus Christ.
- 2 Timothy 4:3-4 (KJV) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Those people will have to pay the price for their actions and ultimately end up in hell, which will be cast into the lake of fire. Since they didn’t have an offering that took the judgment for them they will end up being judged themselves.
- Revelation 20:11-15 (KJV) And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
This isn’t what God wants to do to people. He wants all to be saved but gives everyone a choice that they have to make. However, some love darkness more than light and they rather reject the light (Jesus) to continue living in darkness.
- 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV) The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

What To Do With Todays Acceptable Offering?
The whole point of Jesus was to get us back to our original state before the fall of man. It’s to get rid of this rotten sin-nature and get us born again. For the Holy Spirit to come and dwell inside us. To get us back in a relationship with our Father, God. Just how Jesus’s relationship was with the Father.
It’s to show us how much God loves people. It’s to take on our new nature in Christ Jesus. Just like how it was before sin ever came into the picture.
Born again believers now get to spread the gospel of reconciliation to the world. We aren’t imputing their trespasses against them but get to give them the word of reconciliation. About how Jesus came to reconcile us back to Father God.
We get to share and give the good news wherever we go. Just like how Jesus gave the good news wherever he went.
The people you encounter and are around you have a choice. They can pick the way of Abel or the way of Cain. Regardless of their choice, we as believers get to love them and give them the Kingdom of God. Freely we have received so freely we give.

He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: 12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
