Putting Off The Old Man And Putting On The New Man In Christ

Bible On Desk With Lamp 900×506

When a person is born again through Jesus Christ the old man passes away and they are created a brand new man in Christ. God now wants them to live according to everything Jesus accomplished for them. So what is putting off the old man and putting on the new man according to the bible?

Before a person is born again and knows the Lord Jesus Christ they lived according to the old man of sin. They walked according to the carnal flesh and fulfilled the lust of the flesh. When a person is saved through Jesus they are now considered a brand new man in Christ. They are created in God’s image in righteousness and holiness. They now walk according to the Spirit and have the fruit of the Spirit. Therefore, they now put off the old man with the old deeds of the flesh and put on the new man with the new deeds of the Spirit. The word of God says to walk in the Spirit and they shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

  • Ephesians 4:17-24 (KJV) This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20 But ye have not so learned Christ; 21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
  • Colossians 3:3-11 (KJV) For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
  • Galatians 5:16 (KJV) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Jesus paid a high price to give born again believers a brand new life in Him. God loves them and wants them to know the truth in this area so they can live a life in the Spirit and no longer live life according to the flesh. That being said we are going to go over some of the things concerning the old man before Christ and the new man in Christ. We will speak about being translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. We also are going to address how to put off the old man with those old deeds and put on the new man with the new deeds in Christ. In other words, learn how to walk in the Spirit so the lust of the flesh is not fulfilled.

The Old Man And The New Man In The Bible

The word of God talks about two types of man or in other words two types of people. The bible describes one type of person as the old man and another type of person as the new man. What does the bible say about the old man and the new man?

According to the bible, the old man is the person before being born again through Jesus. This old man is filled with sin, the spirit of the world, and lives in the carnal flesh. They mind the things of the flesh and walk according to the carnal flesh in darkness. The new man is the person that is born again through Jesus Christ and is now considered sons of God. This new man is born again not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. The new man is filled with righteousness, the Holy Spirit, and lives in Christ. They mind the things of the spirit and walk according to the spirit in light.

  • Colossians 3:6-7 (KJV) For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
  • 1 Corinthians 2:12 (KJV) Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
  • 1 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV) But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
  • Romans 6:5-9 (KJV) For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
  • Romans 8:1-11 (KJV) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
  • Ephesians 5:6-9 (KJV) Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

When reading the scripture it’s very important to discern what the word of God says about both of these types of man/people. God came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to deal with the issue of sin and the body of it. He came to destroy the works of the devil and one of those works is the old man which takes after the corruptible seed. God provided the way to Himself through the Son Jesus Christ. This old man can’t see the light of the Son, nor can this old man enter into the kingdom of God. Those that believe the Son and are born again a new man. They are translated out of the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of light which is the kingdom of the Son.

Translated Out Of The Kingdom Of Darkness Into The Kingdom Of Light

Man In Dark With Light Shinning Smiling 900x506

The truth is everyone was born into this world in sin, except Jesus of course. The person before knowing and being saved by the Lord Jesus Christ is considered the old man or old person. This person grew up in darkness with a perspective about life being filtered by the sin nature. To help understand this, let’s look at the kingdom the old man lives in and also the kingdom the new man lives in.

Think about this. A person who walks around in a dark room that is full of objects and furniture keeps bumping into stuff. However, they don’t know what they are stumbling or tripping over because they can’t see. They can’t see because there is no light shining in the room.

  • Romans 3:23 (KJV) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
  • Romans 6:19-21 (KJV) I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
  • Proverbs 4:19 (KJV) The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
  • John 11:10 (KJV) But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
  • 2 Corinthians 4:3-5 (KJV) But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.
  • Matthew 6:23-24 (KJV) But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

This is how it is for the old man. They walk in the night according to the sin nature and are bound by the very thing they are not aware of or can’t see. They yield their members to the carnal flesh and are servants of sin. They reap the fruit of uncleanness and iniquity, which end is death. Yet they don’t even know or understand the one who is influencing their decisions because they are full of darkness. They don’t know what they are stumbling over. Some don’t even understand they are stumbling because Satan has blinded their minds and their eyes can’t see in the dark.

However, when a room is full of darkness and then the light shines forth, it’s easier to see where the light source is coming from. The furniture and objects which was causing the old man to stumble around in the dark are now exposed by the light. The light has become a lamp unto their feet. The person can now simply walk around what the light has exposed and revealed, which previously was hidden in darkness.

  • Psalms 119:105 (KJV) NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
  • Psalms 56:13 (KJV) For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

Now Jesus is the light of the world. He shines brightly so all can see the light source. That being said some will leave the presence of the light when the light shows up. They rather walk and live in the darkness, as Cain did. However, there are those who are drawn in by the light and call upon the name of the Lord which are saved from the darkness. They are translated out of the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light which is the kingdom of the Son Jesus Christ.

  • Genesis 4:16 (KJV) And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
  • Proverbs 2:10-17 (KJV) When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; 11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: 12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; 13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; 15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths: 16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; 17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.
  • Colossians 1:12-17 (KJV) Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
  • Luke 1:74-80 (KJV) That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. 76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, 78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, 79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. 80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

God changes the person and removes the old man and creates a new man called sons of God. He fills them with the Holy Spirit through Jesus. They are now full of light and shine bright in the world while being led by the Holy Spirit. Now because they have the light they can see clearly. They can now see the kingdom of God and walk according to the truth by the spirit. They partake in the promises of Jesus Christ according to what he paid a price for.

  • John 1:12-14 (KJV) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
  • 2 Peter 1:1-11 (KJV) Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
  • John 8:12 (KJV) Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
  • 1 John 1:5 (KJV) This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
  • John 11:9 (KJV) Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

The new man or child of God has the light and knows the truth. They can therfore walk by the Holy Spirit in victory wherever they go. The Holy Spirit wants to teach them about who they have become now. Also what they have available to them because of Jesus. He wants them to shine so others can see the light of Christ.

  • John 8:31-32 (KJV) Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
  • John 14:15-17 (KJV) If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
  • John 14:26 (KJV) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
  • John 16:13-15 (KJV) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
  • 2 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV) Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
  • Matthew 5:14-16 (KJV) Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Once a person is brought into the kingdom of light which is the kingdom of the dear Son Jesus Christ. God wants the born again believer to now recognize and know what Jesus Christ has done for them. God doesn’t remember the old person they use to be before Christ any longer. God wants them to forget about the old person they use to be apart from Christ. God wants them to trust the truth about who Jesus Christ has now made them to be according to what is written in the word of God.

Forgetting The Old Past And Remembering The New Truth In Christ

Person With Beanie 900x506

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to abide with the new man forever. The Holy Ghost is the one who moved inside and turned on the light within the born again believer. In other words, the Holy Spirit is the light within them. He is the one who speaks according to the word, Jesus Christ, and reveals the truth to those who have the light. The teacher is here inside the new man leading them into all truth and causing them to walk free according to Jesus Christ.

That being said under the old covenant of the law they had to continually make animal sacrifices year by year. These old sacrifices they offered year by year could never take away sin, nor make the people perfect. If it did then they would have ceased to be offered because those who were once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

However, Jesus Christ offered his own body which is the perfect sacrifice. He offered one sacrifice for sins forever and sat down at the right hand of God. It’s by the sacrifice of Jesus that those who receive Him, that are born again are sanctified through Him. In other words, they are sanctified by the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all. Jesus has cleansed them and washed them clean with his pure holy blood. By this one offering Jesus has perfected forever them that are sanctified! That’s some good news!

Let’s look at how Jesus sanctified those who received Him and how the Holy Spirit remembers their sin no more.

  • Hebrews 10:1-17 (KJV) For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. 7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. 8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; 9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: 12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
  • John 17:17-21 (KJV) Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. 20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
  • Hebrews 9:26 (KJV) For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
  • Matthew 26:26-28 (KJV) And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
  • Ephesians 2:13-18 (KJV) But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. 18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
  • Revelation 1:5-6 (KJV) And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, 6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Knowing this, the Holy Ghost is a witness to the children of God according to the word. The word says according to the new covenant that God will put his laws into their hearts and in their minds will he write them. The word goes on to say that God no longer remembers their sins and iniquities anymore. God no longer remembers the past old man of sin that they use to be before Christ. That old man of the past when they walked in darkness according to the carnal flesh. Therefore born again believer shouldn’t remember or be conscience of the past old man as if they are that same person now in Christ. Who do you think wants to remind the born again believer of the past old person they used to be before Christ as if it’s still who they are now in Christ? Remember, the Holy Spirit will only agree with what’s written and the Holy Ghost knows who you are now in Christ.

God knows what Jesus has accomplished for the born again believer. He removed the sin of the fallen old man that walked in darkness and gave them the righteousness of Jesus Christ making them a new man who walks according to the light. Jesus sent his Spirit, the Holy Spirit to dwell within the children of God. He wants them to believe the truth, so when the lie tries to come they aren’t fooled and then stumble because of darkness. Rather, that they are reminded of the light of Jesus Christ and walk in the Spirit according to the truth of the written word of God.

Before going into more detail on how to put off the old man and put on the new man. Let’s look at some characteristics of the old man and the new man.

Characteristics Of The Old Man In The Bible

The old man according to the bible is basically the person who does not know and is not born again through Jesus Christ. This person has the sin nature and attributes pertaining to the sin nature. What are some characteristics of the old man according to the bible?

The characteristics of the old man are also known as the works or lust of the carnal flesh. Which are adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, and revellings. They are children of disobedience carried about with every wind of doctrine according to man. They live in the carnal flesh and therefore walk in the flesh. They walk in the vanity of the carnal mind which is darkened and are enmity against God. They believe the lie of the devil and therefore speak corrupt things.

  • Galatians 5:19-21 (KJV) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
  • Galatians 5:26 (KJV) Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
  • Ephesians 4:14 (KJV) That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
  • Ephesians 4:17-19 (KJV) This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
  • Ephesians 4:22 (KJV) That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
  • Ephesians 4:25-29 (KJV) Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. 26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place to the devil. 28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. 29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
  • Ephesians 4:31 (KJV) Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
  • Romans 8:5-9 (KJV) For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

The point is the old carnal man takes on the characteristics of their father the devil. This carnal can never understand the things of the Spirit. In other words, the carnal man doesn’t know and understand the truth and therefore is deceived. They walk according to the lie because they are in the kingdom of darkness. This carnal man takes on the attributes of the things of Satan. The things of Satan are the lust of the flesh and anything else which goes against the written word of God. Basically, this carnal old man goes against God, who is the truth.

Now that we have taken a look according to scripture about the characteristics of the old man. Let’s take a look at the characteristics of the new man in Christ.

Characteristics Of The New Man In The Bible

The new man according to the bible is basically the person who has been born again through Jesus Christ and now has the divine nature that God gave them. This believer has the Holy Ghost and attributes or fruit pertaining to God. What are some characteristics of the new man in Christ according to the bible?

The characteristics of the new man in Christ are also known as the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. They forgive others because they know they have been forgiven by God. The new man minds the things of the Spirit and lives in the Spirit. Therefore they walk in the Spirit. They believe and know the truth, Jesus Christ, and therefore speak the truth according to the written word of God.

  • Galatians 5:22-25 (KJV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
  • Galatians 5:26 (KJV) Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
  • Ephesians 4:1-3 (KJV) I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
  • Ephesians 4:20-32 (KJV) But ye have not so learned Christ; 21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
  • Romans 8:5-9 (KJV) For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

The new man in Christ takes after their Father now who is God. They are full of peace and all the other fruit of the Spirit because they are filled with the Holy Spirit! Jesus Christ got rid of the old root and replaced it with the new root, which produces the new fruit.

Knowing this, let’s now look into putting off the old man and putting on the new man in Christ.

How To Put Off The Old Man And Put On The New Man

Holding Bible In Field 900x506

There are two types of people in the bible. The old man before Christ and the new man in Christ. That being said how does a person put off the old man and put on the new man according to the bible?

The only way to put off the old man is to be born again through Jesus Christ. Once a person is born again they are now considered a new man in Christ. God tells the new man to renew their mind according to what’s written because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. The word of God is the believers daily bread in which they eat. The new man has new desires in Christ which they now live life according to. God says to walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. God ordains them to be with him in the secret place. It’s in this place where they put off and forget the old and put on and remember the new. The grace of God then surpasses understanding and when they go forth the Spirit of God causes them to walk in the truth according to what Jesus has done for them.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
  • Romans 12:2 (KJV) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
  • Romans 10:17 (KJV) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
  • Luke 11:3 (KJV) Give us day by day our daily bread.
  • John 6:48 (KJV) I am that bread of life.
  • Philippians 2:13 (KJV) For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
  • Galatians 5:16-17 (KJV) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
  • Mark 3:13-15 (KJV) And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him. 14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, 15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
  • Psalms 27:4-6 (KJV) One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. 5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. 6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.
  • Psalms 31:20-21 (KJV) Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues. 21 Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.
  • Psalms 32:6-8 (KJV) For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him. 7 Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah. 8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
  • Psalms 119:114 (KJV) Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.
  • Matthew 6:6 (KJV) But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Jesus is the born again believers daily bread. He is the word of life that sustains them. Notice the scripture says our daily bread. Not our weekly, monthly, or yearly bread. Jesus is our daily bread. He is more important than the natural food we eat. There should not be a day that goes by in which they haven’t eaten the daily bread. I’m not speaking of works that a person can boast about. I’m speaking about the desire that God gives His children. We get to enjoy eating from the Lord. This isn’t considered “work” but rather a joy and pleasure to partake in Christ.

The truth is faith comes by hearing the word of God. Notice the word “hearing” means continually hearing. That being said Jesus paid a high price to send his Spirit inside the born again believer so that they can walk according to the Spirit by faith. He ordains them to be with him in the secret place apart from the eyes of man. It’s within this place that Jesus teaches them by the Holy Spirit so that they know and understand the truth. He continually reminds them about what he has done for them and who they are now in him. They are rooted and grounded in Christ. It’s from within this place that the old fruit is no longer recognized and killed off because of the new root. The old man rots away and the new fruit breaks soil because of the new root. The new root is holy and is what makes the believer holy. This holy fruit will become visible in the open naturally speaking as they go forth because of the grace of God through the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Ephesians 3:14-21 (KJV) For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
  • Colossians 1:6 (KJV) Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:
  • Colossians 1:9-12 (KJV) For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
  • 1 Peter 1:13-16 (KJV) Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

That being said, let’s look more in-depth about putting off the old man and putting on the new man. Basically, the new man with the desires God has given them which line up with Christ.

To put off the old man and those deeds, a person must be born again and receive Jesus Christ as Lord. They give their life to God by faith and repent of their sin. God changes them into a new man who now follows Jesus. A quick brief reference of how a person is born again can be seen in 1 John 1.

  • 1 John 1:1-10 (KJV) That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

The reality is when a person is saved through Jesus Christ they are considered a new bottle filled with new wine. The problem is the old way “seems” better at first. This is why God tells the new man to renew their mind and be transformed.

  • Luke 5:37-39 (KJV) And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. 38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. 39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
  • Romans 12:1-2 (KJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
  • Ephesians 4:21-25 (KJV) If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

After a person is born again they are told by God to renew their mind with God’s word. This is because God knows the “old seems” better at first. When a believer renews their mind with the word of God that means the word of God now does the thinking for them. In other words, trust what is written above everything else. That means if a “feeling”, “emotion”, or “thought” comes, whether “good” or “bad”… The new man desires what God said about the subject. They believe speak what God said is better. This is the desire God gives His children. To trust the word of God. The reality is feelings can sometimes lie. Emotions can sometimes lie. Thoughts that try to come can sometimes lie. However, God can’t lie. So desire God.

Now think about this. A child who is just born out the womb doesn’t come out with the knowledge and understanding of who they are. They have a body with a head, arms, legs, hands, feet, eyes, nose, ears, etc. Even though they have these things they don’t know how to use them exactly. As they grow in the knowledge of who they are and what they have available to them they might try to walk but then stumble. They might try to pick something up and then drop it and make a mess. They may not understand how to use the restroom and poop their pants. However, a good parent will teach them who they are, what they have and how to use it properly.

  • 2 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV) Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
  • John 14:26 (KJV) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
  • John 15:26-27 (KJV) But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: 27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

God is teaching and causing them to always walk in victory in all areas of life by the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus Christ sent from the Father.

That being said, let’s go over a child who is born again but may stumble as they are learning the truth. God the Father will teach and guide them by the Holy Spirit according to the word. As they grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ and what He has done for them and also has given them, they will notice things that use to cause them to stumble fade away.

If A Born Again Believer Stumbles

God sent the Holy Spirit to help His children walk in the victory in life right now. For a born again believer, it’s not “when” they stumble but rather, “if” they stumble. If the born again believer happens to stumble after being translated into the kingdom of light. Then they simply forgot the truth about what Jesus did for them. That being said if a just man falls notice they are still considered just. Why? Because they have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ.

  • 1 John 2:1-6 (KJV) My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
  • Proverbs 23:7 (KJV) For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
  • Proverbs 24:16 (KJV) For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

Notice the just man fell 7 times in and rises up again in Proverbs 24:16. Then there is no longer a mention of them fallen after the “7th” time. That being said go back and re-read the section concerning “Translated Out Of The Kingdom Of Darkness Into The Kingdom Of Light” and “Forgetting The Old Past And Remembering The New Truth In Christ”.

God wants to remind believers of what Jesus Christ has accomplished for them which is considered the truth. God wants them to remember that Jesus Christ has purged their old sin and made them righteous and holy through Himself. He wants them to put on the new man he made them to be and put off and forget the old man they use to be before Christ. This is because they are no longer that old man!

When Those That Are Lost & Not Born Again Stumble

God also doesn’t want born again believers to rejoice when one of those lost in the darkness stumbles. God wants the born again believer to shine bright and lead them to the truth in love so they can see the light be free through Jesus Christ.

    • Proverbs 24:17 (KJV) Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:
    • Colossians 4:2-6 (KJV) Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; 3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: 4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. 5 Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

The point is God is love and wants to save people through the Son Jesus Christ. God wants to save the lost from the deceiver, the devil. However, if the believer rejoices that the lost are deceived. Then the believer is missing the entire point of why Jesus Christ came!

  • Luke 9:51-56 (KJV) And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. 53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
  • Matthew 18:11 (KJV) For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.
  • Luke 19:10 (KJV) For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Jesus came to seek and save that which is lost. Therefore the new man’s desire in Christ is for the lost to know the truth about the Lord Jesus so they also can be saved and born again.

Let’s now focus on a born again believer and how to put off the lie and conversation of the old man. And how to put on the truth of the new man according to what is written through Jesus Christ.

Prayer Examples Of Putting On The New Man In Christ

Person Holding Bible In Field 900x506

A lot of born again believers have heard about putting off the old man and putting on the new but they aren’t exactly sure what that looks like. This section will go over how to put on the new man in Christ while putting off the old. Also some examples of putting on the new man God made them to be through Jesus Christ.

To put off the old man before Christ and put on the new man in Christ, the person must hear continually the word of God. Faith comes by hearing the word of God and is used for correction and instruction in righteousness so they can be furnished unto good works. They do this by submitting to what God says which is true and resisting the lies of the devil which is false. They look at the things written in the word that may not yet be “visible” but are eternal and know that the word will change the external temporal situation. They believe and therefore speak by faith knowing they have received what God stated in the bible. They do this in secret between them and God alone with thanksgiving. It is the grace of God that changes the way they now walk in Christ.

  • Romans 10:17 (KJV) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
  • James 4:7 (KJV) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
  • 2 Corinthians 4:18 (KJV) While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
  • Mark 11:22-26 (KJV) And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. 25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
  • Matthew 6:6-7 (KJV) But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
  • 1 John 5:14-15 (KJV) And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
  • Psalms 50:14-15 (KJV) Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: 15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

Knowing this, the believer simply putting on the reality that God says about them now according to what Jesus Christ has done for them. They are spending time alone with the Father in his presence because Jesus provided the way. They hang out and speak with God because they love him. Next are a few examples of putting off the old and putting on the new according to the word of God.

These examples should help you to see and understand how to put off the old and put on the new. Find what the word says about the subject and the new in Christ and trust God.

Put Off The Old Man Of Addiction And Put On The New Man Who Is Free

If you are born again but feel as if you struggle in this area of addiction and stumble, then this is a brief example and prayer of putting on the new man Jesus made you to be.

Father, I’m sorry of that decision to do that. That is the old person I use to be before knowing you. You destroyed that person through Jesus Christ and created me brand new. Thank you for already forgiving me. Thank you for reminding me that I have been set free from all carnal addictions and now I’m addicted to you Lord God. Thank you for giving me new desires which line up with your word. Feelings and emotions have nothing to do with this because your word is the truth and your word made me free through Jesus Christ. Thank you for giving me desires to spend time with you daily, to read your word, to talk to you freely by your grace. You are my daily bread! You said you would never leave me nor forsake me and I’m thankful that you are a good Father and you are faithful. Thank you for being patient with me and teaching me to walk in the Spirit according to who you made to be in Christ.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
  • Romans 6:10-11 (KJV) For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • Psalms 73:23-25 (KJV) Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. 24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.

  • Hebrews 13:5-6 (KJV) Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
  • Psalms 86:15 (KJV) But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.

Put Off The Old Man Of Lust And Put On The New Man Who Loves

If you are born again but feel as if you struggle in the area of lust when a thought comes. Then this is a brief example and prayer of putting on the new man Jesus made you to be.

Father in Jesus name, I know that thought that tried to come to me to lust after that person is not me any longer. That old person I used to be died and no longer has a voice of value in my life. I’m no longer that old person who indulges in the lust of the flesh but rather I now walk in the Spirit. You, Father, sent your Spirit to live within me and have given me self-control. Lord, you also care for them and love them greatly. You said love doesn’t behave itself unseemly, doesn’t seek its own, and thinks no evil. Therefore I see them the way you see them. In other words, I now love them the way you love me. Thank you for giving your word which discerns my true thoughts according to what’s written and also lights the path unto my feet so I know which path to take. That person is more than a sexual object and more than just the way they look. That person is someone’s son/daughter and/or/maybe someone’s dad/mom. Jesus, you paid a high price to die and rise again for them so they can know you in a greater way just like how you helped me! Thank you, Lord, for reminding me that you changed my heart and desires. Also reminding me how much you love them and care for them. Help them to know their true identity which can only be found in you! Also that you are helping them know and grow in the truth according to your word even as I speak because you have laid them upon my heart to pray for them in love.

  • 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (KJV) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:16 (KJV) Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
  • Galatians 5:13 (KJV) For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
  • Galatians 5:16 (KJV) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Put Off The Old Man's Tongue And Put On The New Man's Tongue

If you are born again but feel as if you struggle in the area of the tongue or speaking and happen to stumble. Then this is a brief example and prayer of putting on the new man Jesus made you to be who speaks life and not death.

Father in Jesus name, I’m sorry for speaking that way and saying those things, forgive me. I’m thankful that you are reminding me right now by your goodness and grace that you have already forgiven me once and for all. Just like you have forgiven me, I also forgive myself. The truth is no man can tame the tongue but Father all things are possible with you. You can tame the tongue and have already tamed my tongue. Thank you. Jesus, you came to destroy the works of the devil and that includes the old way of speaking according to the flesh. Thank you for destroying the old person I use to be before knowing you. That old man who would speak death and lies continually and not even realize it. Your word says you have raised me up a new man in Christ who now speaks according to your word. You have tamed my tongue by your Spirit! Thank you for causing me to speak life and not death, blessings and not cursings. Thank you for causing me to grow in the truth so that the next time a similar situation arises I will walk in triumph, I will be slow to speak and you will bring to my remembrance the correct words to choose according to the written word. Thank you for causing me to walk in victory in Christ. The reality is the feelings and emotions have no control over the words which I speak because it’s not by might, nor by power, but by the Holy Spirit! Thank you Father for teaching me how to respond and causing me to walk according to the truth and promise given to me through Jesus Christ!

Put Off The Old Man's Sin Conscience & Put On The New Man's Righteousness Conscience

If you are born again but feel as if you aren’t righteous. Then this is a brief example and prayer of putting on the new man according to what Jesus Christ has done for you.

In the name of Jesus, Father, I just want to thank you for everything you have done for me. I’m thankful that my righteousness isn’t because of me or my works but it’s because of the Lord Jesus Christ. When I was lost and in my sin you loved me so much you sent your word Jesus Christ to provide a way for me to be forgiven and be a child of God. In other words, you came and saved me. Thank you for removing all my sin as far as the east is from the west and giving me your righteousness. Now in your sight, I’m considered sanctified because of the offering of the body of Jesus Christ and I have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus! Thank you for being faithful and saving me. Thank you for saving me by your grace through faith and not of works. Now I’m considered your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works and to walk in them. Now by your Spirit, the Holy Ghost, I get to live and walk by the faith of Jesus Christ who loves me and gave himself for me! Thank you Father for being an amazing dad and helping me! I love you because you first loved me!

  • John 1:12-13 (KJV) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
