There was a certain scribe who came to Jesus and wanted to follow Him wherever He went. Jesus responded about how the Son of man had no place to rest His head. What exactly did Jesus mean when He said the Son of man had no place to lay His head?
The Son of man has no place to lay His head is referring to Jesus having no place to rest His head. The scripture reveals that Jesus is the head of the church and the church is considered the body of Christ. Before Jesus went to the cross, died, and rose again there was no body, of born again believers, where Jesus could rest His head. Ultimately, Jesus was on the way to the cross to destroy the old body of sin and create a new cleansed body for those who receive Him where He can now rest His head.
- Matthew 8:20 (KJV) And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
- Ephesians 5:23 (KJV) For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
- John 17:19-21 (KJV) And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. 20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
- 1 John 3:8 (KJV) He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
As we continue we will go over the Son of man having no place to lay head primarily from a spiritual perspective. We will go over the body of sin, the head of the body of sin, the body of Christ and the head of the body of Christ.

The Body Of Sin
Did you know that sin has a body? What exactly is the body of sin?
In Romans 6:6 the scripture reveals that the body of sin is the old carnal man of the flesh which is filled with the spirit of the world. This is where sin and the old corruptible seed resides and dwells. Jesus came to destroy this old body of sin so those who receive Him can receive a new body in which the Holy Spirit can dwell.
- Romans 6:6-7 (KJV) Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
- 1 John 3:8 (KJV) He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
- Mark 2:22 (KJV) And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.
- John 3:3-8 (KJV) Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
- 1 Peter 1:23 (KJV) Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
The reality is before a person is born again through the Lord Jesus Christ they have the body of sin. That which is born of flesh is flesh and the carnal flesh is the body of sin. Jesus understood that he could not lay his head on the old body of sin. Jesus came to destroy sin and the body of it. He came to destroy this body and create a new one. The truth is the Holy Spirit could not live and dwell in a corrupted body and therefore Jesus provided a way for people to be born again with a new body where His Spirit can now dwell. That being said to destroy the old body means the head of that body also needed to be crushed.
The Head Of The Body Of Sin
The body of sin also has a head which leads it. Who is the head of the body of sin?
The head of the body of sin is the devil. When the serpent deceived Adam & Eve at the fall sin became a problem for man. God declared that His seed would crush the serpent’s head because of this. The serpent is the head of the corrupted body of sin and Jesus came to crush that head and destroy that body so that the captives could go free.
- Genesis 3:13-15 (KJV) And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. 14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
- John 8:44 (KJV) Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
- Ephesians 2:1-3 (KJV) And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
- Ephesians 5:6 (KJV) Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
- Colossians 3:6-7 (KJV) For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
- 1 John 3:8 (KJV) He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
- Romans 8:9-10 (KJV) But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Those who are not born again, who have not received the Spirit of Christ are in othe old carnal flesh. They are by nature the children of wrath which fulfill the lust of the flesh. Whose children are they? Well, the scripture is clear that the father of these children are the devil. Jesus even said to a group of individuals that they are of their father the devil. The scripture goes on to say that before we received Jesus and were born again, that in times past we were also walking according to the prince of the power of the air.
Again Jesus came to bruise the devil’s head, destroy his head, destroy the old body and create a new body in which he could lay his head. Jesus could lay his head on the new body, the new man, and fill them with the Spirit of Christ. Not all people will come to Jesus and be born again. However, those who do come to Him receives a new body which is set free from sin.
The Body Of Christ
God also talks about the body of Christ. What is the body of Christ according to the word of God?
The body of Christ are those who are saved through the Lord Jesus Christ. These people who receive Jesus are born again of the will of God with a new body. God quickens their mortal body and fills them with the Holy Spirit and now calls them His children.
- Matthew 9:17 (KJV) Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.
- John 1:12-13 (KJV) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
- Romans 12:4-5 (KJV) For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
- 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 (KJV) For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
- 1 Corinthians 12:27 (KJV) Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
- Ephesians 4:12 (KJV) For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
The moment a person received Jesus is the moment they are baptized into a new body and God becomes their Father. God knew that the old bottle was not fit for His Holy Spirit to dwell. However, new bottle can now contain the new wine. Jesus destroys the old man’s body and fills them with the Spirit of Christ. This is a fit place for Jesus to lay his head. The scripture is clear that believer’s are not considered the head of the body but they are considered the body of Christ. Jesus being the head of that body.
The Head Of The Body Of Christ
Those who receive Jesus is considered the body of Christ. That being said they are not considered the head of the body. So who is the head of the body of Christ?
The head of the body of Christ is the Lord Jesus. Jesus was manifested to reveal the love of God to us so that we might live through him. In other words Jesus is the head of the church and has preeminence. Jesus is the first, the chief or the highest ranking. Just like the head instructs and leads the body, so does believer listen and follow the Lord Jesus.
- 1 John 4:9 (KJV) In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
- Colossians 1:15-18 (KJV) Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
- Colossians 2:9-15 (KJV) For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Jesus was manifest to reveal the love of God and provide a way for people to live through him. He is the firstborn from the dead and all things were created through him. Again, Those who receive the Lord Jesus become the body of Christ and Jesus is considered the head of that body.
The children of God are considered complete in him. Without Jesus it would be impossible to be saved from sin, from the body of sin, and from the devil. Through Jesus we are circumcised without hands in putting off the body of sins by the circumcision of Christ. The old carnal man is buried and destroyed because Jesus is the one who sets them free. By Jesus we are forgiven of our trespasses and now led by the Spirit of God. This could only be accomplished by the head who is the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Matthew 8:20 (KJV) And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Through the finished work of Jesus he now has created a place for himself to lay his head.
