When most people hear the term falling in love they think of this from a natural standpoint. That being said I want to explain falling in love from a Biblical standpoint which you may not have heard before. So what does it mean to fall in love with God?
The Bible defines love as God. So God is considered love. God also talks about how all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God at one point or another. Except for Jesus of course, Jesus never sinned. In other words, those who have fallen are in need of a loving savior, Jesus. Knowing this, some who have fallen chose to run away from love/God. While others who fell chose to run to love which is the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who fell into love are then washed clean, forgiven of sin, and given the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ! God raises them up a new creation through what Jesus has done for them!
- 1 John 4:16 (KJV) And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
- Romans 3:22-26 (KJV) Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
- Psalms 51:2 (KJV) Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
- Acts 10:43 (KJV) To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
- 1 John 3:5 (KJV) And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
That’s some amazing news! God is love! Jesus is love! He didn’t just leave us fallen on the ground but rather provided a place for us to go! He wants us to fall in love with Him. In other words, God doesn’t want us to run away from love! He wants us to run to love which is Jesus Christ! He then picks us up from the floor, washes us clean from sin, and makes us righteous through what He has done for us! That’s something to be excited about! Knowing all this let’s go over some more scripture to help us understand the love of God through Jesus Christ!

The Fall Of Man In Genesis In Relation To Love
In the Garden of Eden Adam and Eve ended up falling. What I mean by that is they ended up listening to the Serpent’s lie and sinned. They ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in which God commanded them not to eat. God clarified the day they eat of that tree would be the day they die.
- Genesis 2:16-17 (KJV) And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
- Genesis 3:1-6 (KJV) Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
This was the fall of man. The Serpent tricked and tempted the woman. The woman now saw the tree from a different perspective than what God said. She now desired it and ate along with her husband. In doing so they disobeyed God. In other words, they fell into sin.
- James 1:13-15 (KJV) Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
From that point on every person born into this world is born in a fallen state. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God at one point or another. Except for Jesus of course, Jesus never sinned. That being said, God has given each person a measure of faith so they have the ability to call upon His name, which is Jesus, and be saved.
- Romans 3:21-26 (KJV) But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
- 2 Corinthians 5:20-21 (KJV) Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Knowing all this I find the term love very interesting. To be clear I’m not talking about a worldly definition of love or what the world may think love is. I’m talking about what the word love means according to God. I’m talking about the biblical definition of love.
- 1 John 4:16 (KJV) And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
The Bible defines love as God. Now for all you scholars out there, I understand there are different Greek words and terms/definitions for the word love throughout the Bible. In this verse, it’s referring to agape.
Thayer’s definition for agape is brotherly love, affection, good will, love, benevolence. This also means love fests.
Strong’s definition for agape is love that is, affection or benevolence. A love feast, charity, dear, love.
That being said the scripture here states God is love. Therefore love is God. Is that not a simple and easy way to understand the term love? Knowing that God is love, we can now see the relation of the fall of man in regards to love. When Adam/Eve fell and messed up sin tried to cause them to run away from God.
- Genesis 3:9-12 (KJV) And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
Sin tried to cause Adam/Eve to run and hide from God. In other words, Sin tried to cause Adam/Eve to run and hide from love. However, God went looking for Adam/Eve. Again, in other words, love went looking for Adam/Eve even though they fell. How amazing it is that God knew that they fell and still went looking for them to help them.
- Genesis 3:21 (KJV) Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
- Hebrews 9:22 (KJV) And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
God knew how to address and handle sin. Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin. Therefore, God ended up shedding the blood of an animal to make coats of skin to clothe Adam/Eve! God provided a sacrifice for them to address the sin situation. Look at how good the Lord God is! Sound’s like love to me!
I like to view this as how man did fall short and missed it, but God opened His arms wide open so they can fall back in love with Him instead! God then clothes them and makes them clean! Adam/Eve fell right back into the Father’s loving arms. Thinking about it brings tears to my eyes that God would do such a wonderful thing for us.
However, not all people want to fall back into the arms of God. Not all people want to wear the clothes that God wants to provide for them through the sacrifice. Some would rather fall out of love instead of falling back in love with God.
Take Cain for example, God didn’t kick Cain out of His presence. Rather, Cain chose to leave the presence of God.
- Genesis 4:5-8 (KJV) But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. 8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
- Genesis 4:13-17 (KJV) And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. 15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. 16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
- 1 John 3:12 (KJV) Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
Cain disobeyed God and didn’t want to obey Him. When God tried to correct and teach Cain, Cain decided to reject what God said. Cain didn’t find pleasure in the things of God but rather pleasure in the things of man or the world. Cain enjoyed the things of the Serpent. Ultimately Cain didn’t want to be in God’s presence and therefore left the presence of God. In other words, Cain fell out of love but into wickedness or evil.
Since all have fallen at one point or another the question becomes where do they want to fall next? Do they want to fall back in love with God? Or would they rather fall out of the love of God?
Falling Back In Love With God Or Falling Out Of The Love Of God?
To fall in love with God or not to fall in love with God? That is a very important question… The reality is that all are born into sin and are in a fallen state from birth. The only answer to this situation is love. The only answer is God. The only answer is Jesus Christ! Jesus is the solution and the perfect sacrifice because He has never sinned.
- 1 John 4:9-10 (KJV) In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
The love of God, Jesus Christ, was manifested towards us. God sent the only begotten Son into the world so that we can live through Him! God showed us His love by sending the Son to be the propitiation for ours sins!
Jesus, who is love spread both His arms wide open so that those who come to Him can fall back into love!
- Luke 23:34 (KJV) Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
- Luke 23:44-47 (KJV) And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. 47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
- John 19:30 (KJV) When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Just like how God clothed Adam/Eve through a sacrifice, He wants to clothe people today through His Son Jesus Christ! What a better sacrifice as well! The perfect sacrifice! Those who decide to fall into love, into Christ Jesus… In other words, calling on and believing in Him for salvation, God then raises this person up in Christ and cleans them up. God removes the sin, cleans the individual, and they are clothed with a robe of righteousness through Him! Old things pass away and all things become new!
- 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 (KJV) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
- Isaiah 61:10 (KJV) I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
I like to think of this as falling in love when a person is born again through the Lord Jesus Christ! Love aka God reconciles them back to Himself by Jesus Christ! He clothes us with the garments of salvation and gives us a robe of righteousness! We are now called righteous in the eyes of God through Jesus Christ! That’s some good news!
Now those who are lost and have not yet called upon the name of the Lord Jesus… God is searching for them to be saved just like He searched for Adam! God is sending forth His children to preach the good news about Jesus so others can come back to love! This way Jesus can clean them up and they be born again and saved!
- Romans 10:8-15 (KJV) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
Remember the two malefactors on left and right hand of Jesus when He was being crucified?
Luke 23:32-33 (KJV) And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. 33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
Both had a different response to love who was right there on the cross. One of them railed Jesus who is love. In other words, this individual spoke evil, reviled, defamed, and blasphemed Jesus! Sound familiar to Cain? This person didn’t want to fall into the love of Christ but would rather reject what Jesus had to offer! The other malefactor, however, repented and knew that they fell and sinned. This individual knew they deserved to die but also knew that Jesus did nothing wrong! He heard the word of God and wanted to fall back into love with God. So He decided to call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ who received Him with arms wide open! That day He dwelled in love, in Christ, In paradise!
- Luke 23:39-43 (KJV) And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
There are two responses to love today. Another way to say this is, that there are two responses to God/Jesus today. To respond like the one malefactor and reject love/God… Or to respond like the other malefactor which is to repent and accept the love of God, Jesus Christ! Remember, when a person is saved through the Lord Jesus Christ they then dwell in God and God dwells in them.
- 1 John 4:13-16 (KJV) Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
Remember born again believers, you now dwell in love because God is love! You dwell in God and God in you through the Lord Jesus Christ! Therefore be encouraged and remember to share with others the same love that God shared with you!
What If A Born Again Believer Happens To Fall Or Stumble While In Love?
Born again believer one last thing I want to remind you of. Remember you have been restored back into love through the Lord Jesus Christ. God has cleansed you and made you righteous through Him. Knowing this, IF you happen to stumble now, remember to fall into love and not run away from love IF you fall…
- 1 John 2:1-2 (KJV) My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
- Hebrews 10:9-17 (KJV) Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: 12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
The Holy Ghost wanted to remind and encourage you with some good news! Much love in Jesus name!
