Love is one of the most widely used words in the world and yet so many people think it means different things. That being said the world’s definition of love is not the same as God’s definition of love. So what exactly is God’s definition of love in the Bible?
The Bible states that God is love. The Word is God and Jesus is the Word made flesh. Therefore God’s Word is love and Jesus is love. Born again believers have the love of God in their hearts now by the Holy Spirit as a gift from God. Love never fails. (1 John 4:8,16, John 1:1-2,14, Romans 5:5)
- 1 John 4:8 (KJV) He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
- 1 John 4:16 (KJV) And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
- John 1:1-2 (KJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God.
- John 1:14 (KJV) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
- Romans 5:5 (KJV) And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
This Bible explanation is the true definition of love according to God! It’s such an amazing truth that every believer should know and believe. Let’s take a more in-depth look at this type of love according to the Bible.

God and love according to the Bible are one. You can’t have one and not the other. Love is what God is and God is what love is. Let’s now take a look at how love is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
The Father Is Love | Jesus The Son Is Love | The Holy Spirit Is Love
Again, love according to the Bible has nothing to do with what the world’s definition of love is. The world would think the Bible’s definition of love is something foolish. However, the Bible is clear that the very meaning of love is God.
- 1 John 4:8 (KJV) He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
- 1 John 4:16 (KJV) And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
The Bible says that in the beginning was the Word and the Word was God.
- John 17:21 (KJV) That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
In the beginning, before anything was created, there was the Word. The Word was God. The same exact Word was made into flesh or in other words a physical body and dwelt on earth among us. God and Jesus are considered the same Word. Just like how God and love can’t be separated but are considered one. So is God the Father and God the Son. So therefore the Son of God Jesus is also considered love.
The Holy Spirit is also considered God. God is a Spirit and His Spirit is the Holy Ghost which is the Spirit of truth.
- John 4:24 (KJV) God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
- John 14:6 (KJV) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
- John 14:16-17 (KJV) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
- John 6:63 (KJV) It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Remember the Word is God. Jesus is the Word manifested in a body filled with the Holy Spirit. The words Jesus spoke were Spirit. Jesus is also considered the truth and the Holy Spirit is considered the Spirit of truth.
- 2 Corinthians 6:6 (KJV) By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,
- 2 Corinthians 13:14 (KJV) The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. The second epistle to the Corinthians was written from Philippi, a city of Macedonia, by Titus and Lucas.
- 1 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
In other words, the Holy Spirit is also considered love because the Holy Spirit is God. God the Father, God the Son Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Ghost are all considered one. God is love.
The Love Of The Father Manifested Through The Son By The Holy Ghost
Once you realize that God is love then a side of God begins to unravel in truth. We begin to see an attribute of God that we never saw before. It reveals that the very source of love comes from God Himself. That means there is no other source from which love can come. Knowing this when you see an attribute of love in various situations then you can recognize where it actually comes from.
- 1 John 4:9-10 (KJV) In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
God manifested His love towards us. He revealed and expressed love by sending His only begotten Son into the world. The Son, Jesus Christ, came to be the propitiation for our sins. He did this to save people and so the born again believers can live life through Him as if they never sinned. There is no greater love than someone laying down their own life for a friend.
- John 15:13 (KJV) Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Think about it, how could God reveal His great love if there wasn’t a situation where He could express it or manifest it. God, Himself came into the world as the only begotten Son Jesus Christ. Love which is Jesus Christ walked the earth in a body and showed everyone what true love is.
- 1 John 4:8 (KJV) He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
- John 1:1 (KJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- John 1:14 (KJV) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
- Hebrews 1:2-3 (KJV) Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Love in the form of the Son Jesus Christ was revealed and manifested to the entire world. God revealed himself and showed everyone what true love looked like.
Born Again Believers Are Considered Love Through Jesus Christ
Born again believers through the Son Jesus Christ are also considered love. God has delivered them from the power of darkness and translated them into the kingdom of the Son Jesus Christ. Jesus even says that they are one now considered one in God so that the world may know that Jesus Christ was sent.
- Colossians 1:13 (KJV) Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
- John 17:21-23 (KJV) That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
- Romans 5:5 (KJV) And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
So believers have now become one with God. Believers have the Holy Spirit which pours the love of God in their hearts. Since believers are now one through Jesus Christ and filled with the Holy Ghost they are also considered love. Born again believers now have the great privilege of showing everyone what true love is, Jesus Christ.
