As A Man Thinketh So Is He Proverbs 23:7

thought-clouds-900x506

Every person has thoughts that come which try to lead and guide them. What does the Bible say about a person and the way they think?

The Bible talks about the way a person thinks and believes in their heart, so are they. In other words the thoughts that we entertain and believe to be true will reflect who we actually are. Thoughts are powerful and God tells us to discern the thoughts by His Word so we can renew our mind to the truth.

  • Proverbs 23:7 (KJV) For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
  • Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
  • Romans 12:2 (KJV) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

As we continue we are going to go over Proverbs 23:6-8. We will address the context of the bread, meat, and words mentioned here according to the Bible. As a man thinks while eating and drinking will effect their response to the word.

Eat Thou Not The Bread Of An Evil Eye Meaning

evil-eye-in-shadows-900x506

The Bible talks about bread from a natural perspective but also from a spiritual perspective. What’s the meaning about not eating bread of an evil eye?

In proverbs 23:6 eating not the bread of him with an evil eye has a correlation to what Jesus mentioned when He said if your eye is evil the whole body shall be full of darkness. He also told His disciples to beware of the leaven of bread of the Pharisees, Sadducees and Herod. Meaning specifically beware of the ways of Herod and the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees which is hypocrisy. One thing these three groups had in common generally speaking was that they rejected Jesus, His teachings, and wanted to kill Him.

  • Proverbs 23:6 (KJV) Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
  • Matthew 6:23 (KJV) But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
  • Mark 8:15 (KJV) And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
  • Luke 12:1 (KJV) In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
  • Matthew 16:12 (KJV) Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Not all bread or leaven is considered good to eat. The bread these groups were serving spiritually speaking was with an evil eye and full of darkness. The Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians all tried to trap Jesus for telling the truth. Jesus was exposing the darkness of what they were serviing so people would come to Him and be made free. Jesus went around doing good, healing people, given the Kingdom of God and in return those with the evil eye wanted to kill Him for it.

  • Matthew 22:15-22 (KJV) Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. 16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. 17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? 18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? 19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. 20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? 21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s. 22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
  • Matthew 12:9-14 (KJV) And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: 10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. 11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. 13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other. 14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

Ultimately the one with the evil eye is the devil and those who he deceives will also see from his perspective. The devil has a problem with the Word of God. He is crafty and presents his own bread from beneath. A type of food which appeals to the eye but is not nourishing for the soul. Remember how the serpent tricked and deceived Adam and Eve to eat in the Garden of Eden?

  • Genesis 3:1-6 (KJV) Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

The serpent fed them a lie in such a way that the fruit was now pleasant to their eyes. God said the day they eat that food would be the day they died and it was true. This goes hand in hand with Proverbs which talks about not eating the bread of him with an evil eye.

  • Proverbs 23:6 (KJV) Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
  • Genesis 2:16-17 (KJV) And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Bread is mentioned throughout scripture from a natural and spiritual perspective. That being said, bread can also represent words from a particular source. In this case, this type of bread in Proverbs 23:6 should not be eaten even if it may look pleasant to the natural eye. This is because the evil one is given bread or his lying words to deceive the person who is hungry. Now that we have a better understanding of this type of bread what about his dainty meats?

Neither Desire His Dainty Meats

steak-yummy-900x506

The Bible talks about meat from a natural perspective but also from a spiritual perspective. What’s the meaning about neither desiring his dainty meats?

In Proverbs 23:6 the phrase neither desire his dainty meats refers to Satan and the carnal flesh. Satan desires for people to partake in the carnal flesh and food he tries to offer them. The carnal flesh and carnal mind craves things which are contrary to the Spirit. Those who sow to the flesh will reap what the flesh has to offer. The eye or perspective that is considered evil enjoys the things of the flesh but does not desire the things of the Spirit. In other words, God tells us that it’s wise to not consume this type of meat which has no sustenance.

  • Proverbs 23:6 (KJV) Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
  • Galatians 5:17 (KJV) For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
  • Matthew 6:21-24 (KJV) For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
  • Genesis 27:4 (KJV) And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.

It’s easy to see throughout scripture that Satan has a dish which appeals to the carnal eye. Remember Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden? Satan presented a dish to them as food which was not meant to be consumed according to God. The words of the Serpent tricked Adam and Eve into seeing what looked now desirable to eat but when consumed it brought death.

Which brings us to the next point about this morsel causing one to vomit up something sweet.

What Does The Morsel Which Thou Hast Eaten Shalt Thou Vomit Up And Lose Thy Sweet Words Mean?

There are certain foods which complement one another and bring nourishment to the body and soul. That being said there are also things which should not be eaten and harm the body or soul. What’s the Bible mean the morsel which you ate shalt vomit up and lose the sweet words?

In Proverbs 23:8 this morsel is the words which come from an evil source, Satan. The sweet words come from a pure source, God. The carnal flesh/mind is contrary to the things of the Spirit and Spiritual mind. Those who live and think according to the carnal flesh/mind and Satan will vomit up the sweet words of God. To live and think according to the flesh will produce death but to live and think according to the Spirit will produce life an peace. To accept Satan as your master and eat with him means to reject Jesus as your master and what He has to offer you for nourishing meal.

  • Proverbs 23:8 (KJV) The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
  • Psalms 119:103 (KJV) How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
  • Proverbs 16:20-25 (KJV) He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he. 21 The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning. 22 Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly. 23 The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. 24 Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. 25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
  • Galatians 5:16-17 (KJV) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
  • Romans 8:5-6 (KJV) For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
  • Luke 16:13 (KJV) No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

There is a way that seems right to a person but the end thereof bring death. Think about Esau for a moment. Esau decided to sell his birthright for what was appealing to the flesh. But in the end this brought forth death.

  • Hebrews 12:16-17 (KJV) Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

Esau rejected his birthright and never found a place of repentance. Today God wants people to come and eat what He has to offer but to do that it requires an individual to come to a place of repentance. Which brings us to our next point about the spiritual food which fills with sweet words.

Spiritual Food Which Fills With Sweet Words

honey-dripping-into-jar-900x506

There is a type of food which produces life and peace and true sustenance! What is the spiritual food which fills with sweet words?

In Proverbs 23:8 the sweet words refer to the word of God. Specifically Jesus is the sweet word of God the bread of live from above. The Word of God is sweet like honey to taste and beneficial to the body and soul. Jesus is the only way to experience true life now and forever more. Those who receive Him will never hunger or thirst.

  • Proverbs 23:8 (KJV) The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
  • Psalms 141:6 (KJV) When their judges are overthrown in stony places, they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.
  • Proverbs 16:24 (KJV) Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
  • John 6:35 (KJV) And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
  • John 6:51 (KJV) I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
  • John 4:10 (KJV) Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
  • John 4:14 (KJV) But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Jesus invites us to partake of Him so we can have life. He wants to replace the stony heart with a pure heart which sees God by faith with a new eye. He wants us to trust and believe what He says so we never thirst or hunger again. He wants to give us the Holy Spirit so we can now live and walk in the Spirit forevermore.

  • Psalms 141:6 (KJV) When their judges are overthrown in stony places, they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.
  • Ezekiel 36:25-27 (KJV) Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. 26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
  • Matthew 6:19-24 (KJV) Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
  • Matthew 5:8 (KJV) Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

So how does a person repent and partake of this great gift which God has given? By faith in what Jesus Christ has done. The scripture says to confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead and you shall be saved!

  • Romans 6:23 (KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • Romans 10:8-15 (KJV) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Will you receive the Lord Jesus Christ, the gift of God? Maybe you already have? If so thats a good choice. However, some will reject Him and His offer. What will you do? Will you believe the Word of God?

As A Man Thinketh In His Heart So Is He

People think and believe something. What does the scripture mean as a person thinks in their heart so are they?

What a person thinks and believes in their heart is who they are. Some people think and believe evil things from beneath. Others think and believe on good things from above. The most important thing to understand is what a person thinks about Jesus and what He has done. Ultimately this thought and belief in their heart about Jesus will influence how they respond and live their life in earth.

  • Proverbs 23:7 (KJV) For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
  • Colossians 3:1-3 (KJV) If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Now let me be clear. I’m not saying a person who is born again is Jesus. Don’t misunderstand me. I’m simply saying that the way a person thinks and believes will reflect in their life to various degrees. If a person thinks like a devil, well they are going to act like a devil. If a person thinks they are a child of God who is saved through Jesus Christ, they are going to respond like a child of God who is saved through Jesus Christ.

The born again believer is now told by God to think a different way. Our thoughts now are filtered according to the word of God. That doesn’t mean carnal thoughts never come again. It just means if a carnal though comes we take it captive to the obedience of Christ now cause that’s no longer our way of thinking as children of God.

  • 1 Corinthians 2:16 (KJV) For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
  • 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (KJV) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

As believers begin to take carnal thoughts captive according to God’s Word, their mind becomes renewed. The result of this is they are transformed by the Holy Ghost. The Holy Spirit is the teacher and will bring these things to their remembrance. He will cause the good fruit to grow in life. This person is saved by grace through faith not of their own works. However, the Holy Spirit will lead the believer in such a way to walk ordained by the Spirit unto good works.

  • Romans 12:1-2 (KJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
  • John 14:26 (KJV) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
  • Ephesians 2:8-10 (KJV) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
  • Galatians 5:16 (KJV) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
  • Galatians 5:18 (KJV) But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
  • Galatians 5:22-25 (KJV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

On the contrary, the children of the wicked one believes the way that seems right to a man, which end is death. They prefer to reject what God says and believe the lies told by the devil. They hate Jesus and the truth He reveals.  They live according to the flesh and do the works thereof and never come to a place of repentance.

  • Proverbs 14:12 (KJV) There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
  • John 8:44 (KJV) Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
  • Romans 9:8 (KJV) That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
  • 1 John 3:12 (KJV) Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
  • Galatians 4:29 (KJV) But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
  • Acts 13:10 (KJV) And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?
  • Galatians 5:19-21 (KJV) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

What do you think about the Devil? Do you trust the lies that he spreads? The Devil has an evil eye and basically says “eat and drink what I have to offer you”, but his heart is not for you. What do you think about Jesus? Do you trust Him and what He said? He basically says come to Him, “eat His flesh and Drink His blood”. The heart of God is for you and He wants to give you eternal life which can only be found in Christ Jesus!

  • Proverbs 23:6-8 (KJV) Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: 7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. 8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
  • John 6:53-58 (KJV) Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. 58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
